The flowerboxes were then donated to the Mountain City Care Center.

· Laurel’s Operation for Treasure—5th grade students sent soldiers in Iraq a small care package with items such as: gum, sunflower seeds, paper, pens, and other items.  The students wrote letters telling the soldiers about themselves.

Doe Elementary School

· Doe ‘News Crew’—6th grade students created a school newspaper entitled “Doe News” as an effort to promote literacy among fellow schoolmates.  Sections of the newspaper include: What’s Up at Doe?, Question Quest, Doe Comics, Students of the Fall, Test Taking Tips, School Projects, Student Stories and Poems, Book Reviews, Puzzles, and Funnies.  The students were given “jobs” such as editors, layout/design managers, sports writer, comic strip author, book review journalist, advice columnist, and science fiction writer.  The paper was distributed to all students in grades 2-6.

· Poverty Eliminators—4th grade students completed two service learning projects related to poverty in Johnson County.  The students organized clothing and food collection bins.  Hales Ministry took the clothing donations and Second Harvest Food Bank took the food donations.  The donations stayed in Johnson County.

· “Cleaning Crew”— 4th graders start project to keep Doe school clean of litter.  Students brainstormed the cause of the littering on the playgrounds and found that the classes were eating snacks outside and not throwing the papers away in a trash can, or the trash cans were too full.  The students designed holders for extra trash bags and were hung on the wall near the playground door.   The project worked so well that  the school purchased permanent trash bag hangers.
