The Volunteer Center

· The Johnson County Volunteer Center  has in the past worked with AmeriCorps members to provide service learning projects to the youth in our community.  These projects let the children learn about their community and its needs, and they get an opportunity to help fulfill those needs.  They also provide mentor/tutoring in the schools and help with after school and summer youth camps.

· The Volunteer Center and the A.C.T.I.O.N. Coalition recently merged together to make a difference in the lives of the people of Johnson County.

Working together for a common goal.

The Volunteer Center of Mountain City/Johnson County serves as a headquarters for recruiting volunteers in the community.  We work in partnership with the local schools, churches, and service organizations to provide them with a pool of volunteers whose interest and skills can fill their specific needs.

The Johnson County Volunteer Center, in collaboration with America’s Promise, instill the five promises in the lives of the youth of Johnson County.

The 5 Promises of America’s Promise:

· Caring Adults

· Safe Places

· Healthy Start

· Marketable Skills

· Opportunities to Serve

VOLUNTEERText Box: PAST ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
EASTER BASKET AUCTION—businesses made an Easter Basket and put it into the auction . The baskets were auctioned through a silent auction and all the proceeds profited the Volunteer Center to support projects in the school and the community.
TUTORING—support at the community center for subjects in foreign language, math, and English.
STUDENT COURT—designed for the middle school to deter in-school violations such as tardiness, no materials at school, and getting pink slips. Students were involved in serving on the jury which heard cases and reinforced positive judgments. The amount of violations were cut in half after implementing this system. Student court is still in effect at the Johnson County Middle School.
CAMP SURVIVOR—this was a summer camp held at the community center. The camp tuition supported an organization in the community called “The Gift of Love”. The gift of love paid heating bills for community members who can not pay their bill during the winter months. The campers were involved in touring the town of Mountain City and anti-drug education.
AMERICA’S PROMISE—originated through the volunteer center. This organized the only Prison of Promise in the state of Tennessee, schools of promise through the Johnson County School System, and a business of promise which is Janice Russell Attorney at Law. These organizations must live up to the five promises of America’s Promise and be a resource for projects such as surveys, projects, and volunteer opportunities.
GRANT WRITING—this is an ongoing effort to write grants to benefit Johnson County. The Tennessee Lottery Grant was awarded to the Community Center under the coordinated efforts of the Volunteer Center.
AmeriCorps Regional Service Event (May)—served as headquarters for this regional service event where needs were assessed in the community and schools. The AmeriCorps members served to make playgrounds, landscaping, and painting in Mountain City.
DATA BASE—develop a data base of volunteers to help with any need in the community. Volunteers are paired up with specific needs and interests. Volunteers young and old encouraged to get involved.
